DIY - UPCYCLED 'IKEA HACK' MIRROR FRAME [with plans!]

Were finally on the last straight to getting our house back to 'normal' after the recent renovation works including 2.5 bathroom refits and a conversion - yikes. A builder/decorator/plaster free home has been a rare occasion and it is amazing to once again have our home back and to be able to 'finish off' the rooms which have been needing off work for so long.

Amongst all this work we also had the idea to swap around two of our bedrooms. Out youngest daughter (with her huge cotbed/changing table and wardrobe combo) were in the second largest room in our home, but she now no longer needs so much furniture (her wardrobe was SO bulky so i found another use for that [more details soon] and a changing table was no longer required) do we figured this would be a great time to move her to another room so she could settle into something decorated specifically for her. This move also meant that our larger spare room would now be able to house guests comfortably rather than the smaller room which was just not suitable.

Stuffed away in a corner of our spare room was a purchase that we made when buying our first home (so around 9 years ago!) like most i love an Ikea visit and during one of these visits we purchased a HUGE mirror, the actual mirror of this size is no longer available (boo) but you can see the smaller version HERE. At the time i loved the mirror... now, not so much love. We kept it mostly as we did not have another full length mirror in our home. So it got stowed away in a corner of our guest bedroom, it was useful to have but... it wasn't loved and i didn't like it.
Fast forward to our 'room swap' our gorgeous baby girl has her own beautiful DIY - baton board bedroom which looks AMAZING [more to follow on that] and were down to 'room planning' and then the topic of 'the mirror' our conversation went as follows;

Me "So what about the mirror?"
Mr Smith " Throw it out"
Me "NO!!!"

I hate to throw things out and it really pained me to get rid of this HUGE mirror, it needed a second lease of life... Ping! Eureka! Lightbulb moment!

THIS IS PICTURE OF WHAT THE MIRROR LOOKED LIKE BEFORE
its not my actual frame - bad blogger forgot to take a photo. its linked accordingly.

PLANS

ALSO...
I will add that a LARGE amount of extra strength glue was added to ensure the frame attached to the glass panel as the mirror was so huge. We used a wall tie to secure the frame to the wall so it could not be pulled over. Safety Safety!

[Apologies in advance for the photos below, we had to try and assemble this HUGE frame inside as it was pooring with rain, so the best was made with the space available - they should give you the general idea though :)]

Reclaimed Wood
This time we opted for the reclaimed wood 'look' due to the size and weight of the mirror (and frame) we opted for the lightest weight wood as possible which unfortunately ruled out our reclaimed wood stock pile (boo!) we purchased our wood at a local hardware store and used a combination of dark oak wood stain and grey paint. This was then sanded off once dry to create the wooden look required. Some areas had a second coat/extra sanding for effect.
