DIY - RECLAIMED WOOD SHELVING

** EDEA SMITH IS NOW ON FACEBOOK - CLICK HERE **

When we moved to our new home we wanted to personalise it as much as possible, this finally felt not just like a house but a home, we could raise our children here and truly make it unique for us. The first room to get any TLC was our lounge, the tricky part with our lounge was this odd 'behind the door and had no solid purpose but to be a pain' kind of space, this 'space' eventually became my longly wished for reading nook (i.love.it) as our walls were plain and lacking in any 'off the floor' storage we opted for a couple of shelving

- a post on the reading nook will be along shortly, watch this space...

These shelves were SUPER easy and (i think) look pretty smart. They are made from three singular boards which are adhered together and mounted upon rustic iron brackets.

These shelves compliment our lounge perfectly and as we already have several reclaimed wood projects residing there...

Back to the shelving...

WHAT WAS USED - This makes two shelves
Brackets (90 degree wall mountable brackets) x4
Wooden Baton Lengths (ours were 24"L x 2"D x 2.5"H) x6
Screws
Screwdriver
Saw
Measure
Wood Glue
Nails
Hammer
Varnish (We used a light oak)
Rag (for excess varnish)

WHAT TO DO
> Measure out and cut down 6 lengths
> Sand the shelves to remove and sharp corners etc
> Glue together 3 of batons, for added support we also nailed through sides (clearly i don't want my shelves to fall down!) do this twice to create a second shelf if required.
* tip - we checked the fixing points against the shelf to ensure they would be suitable (see below image)
> Varnish the shelves
*tip i did two lights coats, personal preference though, wipe off any excess
> Sand the shelves again, the more 'rugged' the better
> Attach the shelf to the mounting bracket
> Hang your shelves with pride :)

  1. I love the warmth and texture of the old wood, plus the industrial vibe of the finished shelves. Pinned at my Fridays Unfolded link board, and so glad you stopped by to share!

  2. Lordy, I love your shelving solution. I do believe I have not only those same brackets but very similar boards and a blank awkward space on one wall. Thanks for the inspiration!
