DIY - RECLAIMED WOOD KEY HOLDER

** EDEA SMITH IS NOW ON FACEBOOK - CLICK HERE **

The amount of times i have lost my keys is to be honest beyond embarrassing, its become a running joke in our house and I'm quite ashamed. But as every multi tasking Momma (and Daddy) out there when your juggling two young children in and out of vehicles/homes, trying to remember things like changing bags/shopping, keys can (and do) get easily misplaced (the boot of the car, roof of the car, front door, bottom of a shopping bag...) to name a few, need i go on?

So, a solution was required...

I knew what i didn't want, so that was the first step. I didn't want a 'bowl' i didn't want something that could potentially be at 'child' level so our children could get hold of the keys (a safety thought there) also, i don't like to see keys look like there just laying around. So a bowl was a no no. I also knew what i did  like, good old, beautiful looking reclaimed wood :)

I had a small section of wall to work with so the key holder couldn't very wide. As i had some reclaimed scaffold boards to hand (they cost nothing - you can often get them free if you ask around, pallet wood would also work) it also needed to have around 3 hooks for my keys, hubbys keys and maybe a spare set. In addition I wanted to incorporate a 'shelf' which would house a vase/candle (Here is the link to DIY - Vintage Chic Jar Vase which was entirely made for FREE!)

WHAT YOU NEED
Reclaimed Wood (i used 57Hx5Dx14W cm)
3x Hooks
Saw
Tape Measure
Wall Mounts
Nails
Hammer
Sander
Varnish (ours was light oak)
Rags (for excess varnish)
Wood Glue
2x Screws (long enough to attach the shelf)

WHAT I DID
> Cut the reclaimed wood down to size (57cm height)
> Cut an additional section for the 'shelf' (6x5x14cm)
> Sand both sections well and varnish
* tip remove any excess varnish with an old rag
> I then sanded again once dry to add a more worn look
> I left a gap of 12cm from the bottom of the main board and glued the shelf into place
* tip use a spirit level, my wood was quite old so this took a bit of sorting!
> Flip the board over and screw through the back panel into the 'shelf' to secure it in place
> Turn the board back over and attach the three hooks (for your keys) i put these roughly 7cm from the bottom
> Add two wall mounts to the back and hang it accordingly
> As our shelf was 6cm from the front to the back it is deep enough to accommodate a candle or narrow vase. Here is the link to my DIY : Vintage Chic Vase which was made for FREE!!

Enjoy x

  9. Any news on this neat project? I'm interested in running the Caverns soon but I heard formatting makes reading the module a real chore. motorcycle key chain
