DIY - 'RECLAIMED WOOD' COAT RACK

** EDEA SMITH IS NOW ON FACEBOOK - CLICK HERE **

Today i wanted to show you one of the biggest DIY reclaimed wood items in our home at the moment. It's also one of my favourites. It's functional and it also looks GREAT!

We have recently been lucky enough to have our utility room made over, it literally went to scratch and we started from the ground up, new cupboards, flooring, pain work, surfaces (the lot) as the utility is long and narrow (galley style) this left us with a blank wall... oh how i love a blank wall - haha.

Storage for coats and hats (British weather!) was a must and until now we had no-where that served this purpose so this is how the idea for a large (very large) coat display came about.

WHAT WAS USED
6x Antique Iron Coat Hooks (ours were purchased from HERE)
Reclaimed Wood
Varnish
Rag (for excess varnish)
Screws
Drill
Hammer
Wall Mount Screws
Wall Mount Plugs
Spirit Level

WHAT WE DID
> Selected the wood, i wanted a really weathered effect so the more 'dings' the wood had the better... in fact, to add more detail i dug out a hammer and added more dints and details (it was fun too)
> Really sand the wood. Again to add effect i used a very coarse sandpaper.
> Varnish the board, wipe off any excess. Wait till it dries
> Sand again to add detail
> Mark out coat hook locations (ours were evenly spaced across the board) attach your hooks securely
> Drill four points through the board for wall mount screws (as this is a pretty heavy bit of wood and to make sure it would be secure on the wall i went with four)
> Fix wall mounts into wall
> Attach wooden board to mounts securely  *using a spirit level where needed

  2. Love the rustic look! I just did the same thing my garage using a piece of wood from an old bed. I decided to do that because it was a great way to use something I already had, plus I refused to pay how much the stores were charging for the same basic thing. lol

    1. I totally agree. I love the fact that we have a beautiful item in our home that not only looks fab but also cost hardly anything (the cost of coat hooks in this case) :)
